2009 will feature the 'Ukulele instruction of
Kimo Hussey and Tim Dang, Lei Hulu (Feather Lei) will be instructed by Herman Mossman Tachera and joining us this year will be Liko Puha who will instruct additional Hawaiian culture related sessions such as Hula, Hawaiian language and Oli (chant).

The 3 day and 2 night workshop will be held at the beautiful Westerbeke Ranch in Sonoma Valley Wine Country.  'Ukulele or Hawaiian feather lei workshop fee includes all materials, all gourmet meals, accommodations, and all extra activities.

Planned for 2009:
 
  • 2 nights / 3 days of 'ukulele or feather lei instruction
  • 'Ukulele breakout sessions specific to beginner and advanced/inter. playing
  • Optional sessions: Hula, Oli (chant), and 'Olelo (Hawaiian language)
  • Nightly wine receptions - taste local wines of the valley
  • Saturday evening benefit concert - relax poolside under the stars and enjoy the smooth sounds of your ukulele instructors and special guests!
  • Nightly kanikapila sessions
  • Lei Hulu (feather lei) Exhibit
  • Ukulele display and Q&A discussion with several local custom ukulele builders; test drive some of the best locally made custom ukes;
  • E Ho'omau Workshops will again offer a Youth Scholarship

    'Ukulele Workshop
    with Kimo Hussey and Tim Dang
      Our workshop will emphasize practice techniques and learning songs. The workshop will provide you workable, easy to apply practice techniques which will provide balance between left hand activity, right hand activity and adherence to applicable music theory principles. The overall goal is to reduce the amount of time it takes to learn new music.  Workshop is applicable to all levels of playing ability.  There will be breakout sessions to address playing level specific topics.

    Kimo Hussey and Tim Dang form an incomparable combination of ukulele instruction backed by decades of facilitating workshops, live entertainment worldwide, professional recordings and great empathy for students interested in enhancing their enjoyment of music. Come with instruments tuned, ready for some hard work and all the capacity in the world to laugh and have fun!!!     Feather Lei Workshop
    with Herman Tachera
      Feather lei workshop includes lecture and all materials. We will be making a traditional feather lei using dyed goose feathers.
                              Your Instructor
    Herman Tachera has been a Hawaiian feather artisan for the past ten years and has created numerous feather lei, kahili and 'uli'uli. He has studied his craft with Paulette Kahalepuna and Mary Lou Kekuewa, Michael Vieira and Coreen Mikioi Iwamoto. He has received recognition and endorsement as a feather lei teacher from Hawaiian Feather Arts masters, Paulette Kalepuna and Mary Lou Kekuewa.
     
    Additional Sessions
    with Liko Puha
      Hawaiian cultural sessions will be offered as optional and 
    supplemental to the 'Ukulele and Feather Lei workshops.  Sessions will include Hula, intro to Hawaiian language and Oli (chant).                                      
                            Your Instructor

    "Nowelo mau aku i ka na'auao." Perpetually seeking wisdom and knowledge.  This is the guiding principle of Liko Puha's method of teaching as he and his students learn to understand, honor, appreciate and perpetuate Hawaiian language, culture and history.  Liko has been involved with oli and hula for over 20 years. He has performed oli at many major events including the Merrie Monarch Festival and Special Olympics and has taught oli, oli appreciation, male hula and Hawaiian philosophy at the Beamer Aloha Music Camp and the Kahumoku Hawaiian Music and Lifestyle Camp.

    $600 for 'Ukulele or Feather Lei Workshop: includes all fees and materials , all gourmet meals, shared accommodations, and all extra activities. Companion rate: $500 includes all except 'Ukulele and Feather Lei workshop sessions.   Rate without accommodations (if you choose to stay off-site): $450

    Ukulele Workshop Youth Scholarship!

    Scholarship award: ukulele workshop fee.  Application Deadline: August 28th 2009.  

    The scholarship is available to any youth between the ages of 18 and 24 that is currently engaged in an ukulele group or ukulele classes.  To submit an application simply email registration@hoomauukulele.com with your name, age, address, phone number, email address and reason why you or your nominee should be selected.  All applicants will be contacted by email on August 30th and the winner will be contacted by phone.

    Saturday Evening Benefit Concert! 

    The Saturday evening outdoor dinner concert will be a benefit for the “Ukes for Kids” program
    of Molokai and the Pacific Music Foundation. It will feature Kimo Hussey Faith Ako and Tim Dang. The concert is being held in conjunction with the ukulele and feather lei workshops.  If you can't join us for the workshops be sure to join us for a great dinner and concert at an incredible setting in the wine country.

    Faith Ako: Bay areas own Hawaii Music Award winner for "Traditional Hawaiian Music" and "Best New Artist" (www.faithako.com).
